Zebrafish Nose Hairs

The zebrafish have tiny cilia in their olfactory placode which beat in a rhythmic fashion.  This serves to bring in chemicals towards the olfactory organ which enable the fish to smell for food and avoid toxic substances.  Here's a movie of these cilia we made from a normal zebrafish which is dramatically slowed down (the whole thing takes place in only 2 seconds) in order to study their motion more clearly.  These olfactory cilia are structurally similar to cilia also found in the kidneys--one of the reasons I am making movies of these zfish nose hairs...
